I refer to Mr David Kwok's letter, "No-work rule should apply to all sites" (my paper, April 26).
The National Environment Agency (NEA) requires construction sites to abide by specified noise limits. Stricter noise limits are imposed at night, on Sundays and public holidays, and for construction sites near hospitals, schools and residential premises.
Over the past two years, NEA has implemented further measures to limit noise from construction activities near residential areas on Sundays and public holidays.
There are four construction sites within the Tanjong Pagar area. The sites at the Carlton Hotel and Amara Hotel commenced work after Sept 1, 2010, but before Sept 1 last year.
There are another two construction sites along Enggor Street which commenced work before September 2010.
Taking into consideration construction-project schedules and resource planning, the new measures with stricter requirements cannot be applied retroactively to construction sites that commenced work before Sept 1, 2010.
We would like to assure Mr Kwok that NEA will continue to monitor these sites. Members of the public can call NEA on 1800-2255-632 should they notice any construction sites which do not abide by these regulations.
