Allow football team from reality TV show to join

I refer to the reports "FAS working to improve the S-League" and "Health of S-League in the spotlight" (The New Paper, June 28).

One step the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) can consider is to allow the First XI team from the MediaCorp Channel 5 reality TV series to join the S-League.

First of all, the S-League needs one more team to make the total an even number. The withdrawal of Etoile has left the league with 13 teams, making fixtures difficult.

And in the First XI, we have a team that has gone through a lot of different types of training. They have picked up the basics and have reached quite a respectable playing standard under the guidance of coaches Steve McMahon and R. Sasikumar.

Through the reality TV series, they would also have managed to build up an audience and even something of a fan base.

There are bound to be people who want to turn up at the stadiums to watch them play live.

And that is just what the S-League needs badly right now.

This has already been proven in a way, with the final match of the show attracting a good crowd to the Jalan Besar Stadium where the First XI played against the S-League All-Stars in May.

The crowd that day was comparable to the crowds at Lions XII matches.

Even if people have to pay to watch this team, I believe a good number will turn up.
