The New Paper

LIVERPOOL'S weaknesses are apparent and for all to see. Despite boasting the all-time league title win record, their current plight is laughable.

As a Manchester United fan trying to sound as impartial as I can, I'd reckon Liverpool's barren title run will continue as long as these issues are not addressed.

Lack of acumen in the transfer market - forget Fernando Torres - which other imported Liverpool player can the faithful Kop boast about? Rafa Benitez's buys have been woeful ever since he arrived at the helm - Jermaine Pennant, Andriy Voronin, Peter Crouch and Mark Gonzalez are just good players, not great. Others like Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva are not world beaters either. The failure to sign a world class winger has been his biggest drawback.

It baffles me to see how much affection Benitez gets from the Kop. Winning the FA Cup and the Champions League by the smallest of margins and he has already gained cult status - how bad times have become? A team that once swept through almost all competitions have to now choose and set priorities. It's a pity, really. Benitez may be a 'master tactician' but he is just not consistent enough. His tinkering and his substitution antics have already come under scrutiny and time will reveal all his other weaknesses. Get rid of him.

My proposal may seem too far-fetched, but Liverpool are too one-dimensional. Nullify the threat of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard and Liverpool are as good as the Evertons and Aston Villas.

Something has to be done to reclaim that elusive title and perhaps it should begin with Rafa's resignation or perhaps even sacking.

A bitter truth.
