DANNY Lee is the youngest winner of the US Amateur. That feat in August erased Tiger Woods from the record books. And New Zealand golf prodigy Lee will be making his way to our island to compete in this month's Barclays Singapore Open, reported asiantour.com. The 18-year-old, ranked the No. 1 amateur in the game, has earned a start in the US$5 million ($7.6m) tournament through one of the five places allocated to amateurs through the Singapore Golf Association. The tournament is being played at Sentosa Golf Club from 13 to 16 Nov and features an incredible line-up of players led by American Phil Mickelson, Padraig Harrington from Ireland, Australia's Adam Scott, South African Ernie Els, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke and Choi Kyung Ju from Korea. Other players to have recently entered are England's Ian Poulter, Oliver Wilson and Simon Dyson, Dane Thomas Bjorn, Northern Ireland's Rory Mcilroy, South African David Frost, Japan's Shigeki Maruyama, Scotland's Paul Lawrie and Australian Nick O'Hern. All eyes are certain to be on Lee, who was born in South Korea and emigrated to New Zealand when he was eight. He beat American Drew Kittleson 5 and 4 in the final of the US Amateur at Pinehurst in North Carolina. At 18 years and 32 days, the Kiwi became the youngest player to win the title since it was first contested in 1895, eclipsing Woods, who was six months and 29 days older when he won the first of three successive amateur crowns in 1994. Lee also became the first New Zealander and just the ninth foreign-born player to lift the prestigious trophy. Lee's profile has gone through the roof in the US, with the US Amateur title following his tie for 20th in the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship and his win in the Western Amateur. The talented young golfer became a naturalised New Zealander in Sep 2008 at Rotorua, where he attends Rotorua Boys' High School.
