Lions can defend title

The New Paper

THE LIONS will win the AFF Suzuki Cup for a record fourth time and there are four reasons why I think so.

Firstly, there is stability in the team as the majority of the players like Lionel Lewis, Daniel Bennett, Noh Alam Shah, Indra Sahdan, Mustafic Fahrudin and Shi Jiayi have been playing together for the last few years.

Secondly, team spirit is at a high. If the huddling and shouting of 'Majulah' to send Qiu Li off at the hotel lobby is anything to go by, then I am feeling a great sense of brotherhood that will set them apart from their opponents during tough battles at the tournament.

Thirdly, we have a great coach in Raddy Avramovic. The relationship and respect built up over the last few years between Avramovic and the players is clear for all to see and it will continue to blossom into great performances on the pitch.

Last but not least, this year has been a bumper year for Singapore sports. I suspect Lady Luck will continue to smile on us as we finish off 2008 with the Lions lifting up the AFF Suzuki Cup for a record fourth time.

MORE LETTERS

  • Aleksander the great

IT IS not wrong to say that our chances of winning depends on the form of Aleksander Duric, who has been playing very well. Hopefully we can win this to give him due credit!

  • Look out for Reid's Thais

THAILAND will pose the greatest threat to the Lions with the appointment of the experienced Peter Reid who is not afraid to drop big-name players and select in-form players over reputation. The Khairul Amri-less Lions will find the Thais tough opposition.

  • Lions have a balanced squad

SINGAPORE have a strong spine with Lionel Lewis, Daniel Bennett, Mustafic Fahrudin and Aleksander Duric in goal, defence, midfield and attack respectively, The current team has a good mix of upcoming talents and experienced internationals.

Lim Shao Cong, 16, student, Manchester United fan

  • We know they can play

THE LIONS are still fresh from the domestic competitions and the fact that the players have shown that they can stand tall even during the pre-World Cup Qualifiers gives us more reasons to believe that the Lions have the fire in them to bring back the cup.

    QUESTION OF THE WEEK

    Ronaldo: bad boy or victim?

CRISTIANO Ronaldo has been subjected to increasingly rough tackles lately, along with jeers from the opposition fans.

But he is no angel either, gesturing to Aston Villa fans and getting himself sent off against Manchester City on Sunday.

The Postman's Question of the Week: Is Ronaldo a bad boy, or a victim of the fans' abuse?

The word limit is 200 words and the deadline is 4pm tomorrow.
