'We wanted to have sex with girl'

By Vivien Chan

THE full-time national serviceman had booked out of camp and wanted to have sex.

So Muhammad Shafie Ahmad Abdullah, 19, told his friends to invite girls for a drinking session at his home.

One 17-year-old girl turned up.

Shafie and four of his friends are now accused of raping and sexually assaulting her.

The details of how Shafie wanted girls were revealed in his co-accused Mohd Sadruddin Azman's police statement, which was read out in court yesterday.

Sadruddin, also 19, said he was on the way home from work (as a waiter) on 25 December last year when he spoke to Shafie on the phone.

Shafie invited him to his home in Woodlands for drinks with his friends.

Sadruddin said: "(Shafie) then asked me if I have 'chick' (slang for a young woman.) Knowing what his friend meant, he said he didn't and asked why Shafie wanted a girl.

Shafie replied that when he's out from camp, "he wants to have sex".

Sadruddin then called his female friends, but only one answered. When he invited her over for a drink, she said that she could not leave home and that she doesn't drink.

When he arrived at Shafie's flat, the others were already there.

Sadruddin said he heard Lim Boon Tai, 20, talk about bringing a girl, whom he had just got to know, to the flat.

Lim also suggested that Shafie buy drinks "to get the girl drunk so that we can easily get the girl".

"I got the idea that it will be easy to have sex with the girl while the girl is drunk," Sadruddin said.

Rishi Mohan, 17, was told to meet her at the Woodlands bus interchange and bring her to the flat.

Lim gave him money for cab fare.

Rishi's statement, which was also read in court, said that when the pair arrived at the flat, the girl initially refused to enter.

"I think (she) was afraid as there were lots of guys inside the house," he added.

Lim then went out to talk to her, after which she followed him in.

The group sat around watching television and playing games.

Bored, they then started playing card games where the loser had to drink a cocktail of vodka and soft drink.

The girl drank at least five cups and appeared tipsy.

"She kept on laughing to herself like a mad person," said Rishi.

"Truth or Dare"

They also played "Truth or Dare", during which the girl was dared to kiss Lim.

"She was shy", Sadruddin said, so they switched off the lights in the living room to allow her to carry out the dare unseen.

Just then, there was a knock on the main door. The group panicked as they thought Shafie's parents had come home.

Rishi said Shafie's parents, being Muslims, did not like them to drink alcohol.

While he hid the beer bottles, Lim hid in Shafie's bedroom with the girl.

But it turned out it was their friend, Mohamed Firdaus Roslan, 18, at the door.

He had earlier left the flat.

Sadruddin said Rishi stood outside the bedroom and tried to listen in on Lim and the girl.

He told the others the two were having sex.

Sadruddin commented that Lim "had the girl for himself".

"We said to one another that after (Lim), we wanted to go into the room one by one to have sex with the girl," he added.

Shortly after, Lim came out of the room with a towel wrapped around his waist.

He was smiling and looked happy, Rishi and Sadruddin said in their statements.

He told his friends he had sex with the girl.

The four then tried to enter the room but the girl had locked the door.

She came out after Lim spoke to her.

ASP David Chan Wai Mun, the duty officer of the serious sexual crimes branch, had told the court earlier that the girl wanted to go home then, but stayed on after Lim said he would send her home later.

Rishi said he then tried to get the girl to "hang out" with him in the bedroom, but was turned down.

After the guys went into the bedroom to rest, Lim went out to the living room and offered to carry the tired girl into the room.

ASP Chan said the girl declined the offer.

She then "voluntarily" walked into the bedroom.

Sadruddin said the girl lay beside Lim on a mattress. He saw Lim hugging and fondling the girl, who remained "still".

Rishi and Firdaus moved nearer to the girl and touched her legs and private parts.

Rishi admitted that he sexually assaulted her, followed by Firdaus.

She "lay still"

According to both statements, Lim, and later Rishi, made the girl perform oral sex on them.

Sadruddin said he had sex with the girl, followed by Firdaus, then Shafie.

The girl "lay still" throughout.

Afterwards, Lim carried the girl, who was naked and bleeding, into the bathroom to "wash up".

The prosecution earlier alleged that Lim then raped her on the toilet floor.

Sadruddin admitted in his statement that he did not ask the girl's permission before having sex with her.

He also said the girl never resisted, but only lay down "with her eyes closed and never said anything".

When questioned by the police if the group had planned beforehand to "gangbang" the girl when she was drunk, Sadruddin replied: "(Lim) planned to have sex with her. (Shafie) just wants to join in as it is at his house. Me, Rishi and (Firdaus) agreed to join in if they did have sex with her."

Rishi admitted in his statement that the girl's body language showed "(she) was not willing to have sex with us".

He also admitted that he had "raped (the girl) and assisted (his) friends to rape her".

While he and Sadruddin expressed remorse in their statement, they and their friends appeared relaxed in court yesterday.

As descriptions of the sexual assault in the statements were read aloud, they snickered.

Rishi, who was in remand with Sadruddin and Shafie, was out on bail yesterday.

He joins Lim and Firdaus, who have been out on $50,000 bail since the trial started.

The trial continues.
