A LITTERBUG who could not produce any identity papers panicked - and plunged to his death after jumping over a wall.

He fell from a height of about 15m and fractured the left side of his skull.

The man, believed to be an Indian national in his 30s, had been spotted throwing a cigarette butt into a bush in the area around the Woodlands MRT station at about 12.30pm yesterday.

Witnesses told The Straits Times the man had jumped over a wall on the level where the MRT ticket concourse is located.

The bus interchange is located beneath the station.

One witness, production operator Sazali Amat, 45, was waiting for a friend at the station when he saw the man sitting on a bench outside.

The man was smoking a cigarette which he later threw into the bushes behind the bench.

Three National Environment Agency (NEA) officers who saw the act, approached the man, clad in a dark-coloured T-shirt and jeans.

They spoke to him before bringing him into the train station's concourse area.

Mr Sazali said he overheard their conversation. The officers had called the police when the man could not produce any identification papers.

'They were telling him not to worry and to relax,' Mr Sazali said.

The man then received a call on his mobile phone.

'He suddenly got up and ran off very fast. One of the officers shouted for him to stop,' Mr Sazali said.

But the man ran on and made a 50m sprint before taking the deadly plunge. His body was found next to a grass patch near Berth 9 of the alighting area of Woodlands regional bus interchange.

Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedics pronounced him dead at about 1pm.

The NEA said the officers have given their statements to the police and refused to further comment.

Mr Sazali said: 'I feel very sad for him.

'If only he had surrendered, he could have been sent back to India and reunited with his family.'

The police are investigating the case as unnatural death.
