Changi signs deal on West Bengal airport
Thu, Feb 28, 2008
The Straits Times
INDIA'S first privately owned airport - to be built in West Bengal state as part of a new 'city' with an industrial and logistics hub - has Changi Airports International (CAI) as a key partner.

CAI, the investment and consultancy arm of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, said yesterday it had sealed a deal with Bengal Aerotropolis Projects, a company that was set up recently to develop Durgapur Aerotropolis.

The US$2.5 billion (S$3.5 billion) plan will be completed in five years, but the airport will open in 2010 with an initial handling capacity of about half a million passengers a year.

As part of the tie-up, CAI will carry out a detailed review of the airport, including its capacity, land use and terminal layout.

It will also train senior management from the Indian company on airport operations.

In the long term, CAI aims to also have a hand in operating and managing the airport.
