Tell us exactly what happened

The Straits Times

I AM disturbed by the security lapse and apparent negligence that resulted in the escape of a terrorist who has not been caught yet.

As a regular public transport commuter, thousands of other Singaporeans and I, hear and see daily, vocal reminders and announcements over the audio and video system to be alert and vigilant.

We are told to be wary of suspicious articles or people.

If the security was indeed tight, as reports of the escape of Mas Selamat Kastari claim, how did we allow a highly dangerous and the most wanted terrorist in Singapore escape? Are Singaporeans supposed to accept the news with a pinch of salt - that this fugitive, is, after all, reportedly unarmed and does not appear to pose an imminent threat to the public?

Singaporeans have always had an abiding confidence, faith and trust in the efficiency of our law enforcement agencies. We also do not mind the constant reminders to stay vigilant and play our part.

I am sure Singaporeans would like to know the details of the escape - what happened from the time the terrorist left for the restroom while his family members were waiting for him.

Was he escorted to the restroom, and where were the security personnel at that time?

Was he handcuffed and how many security personnel accompanied him?

Did our law enforcement officers let their guard down?

Such a slip is professionally unforgivable. More explanation is required beyond the apology tendered regarding the episode by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Wong Kan Seng.

As a citizen, I am deeply concerned, especially if Mas Selamat continues to be on the loose.
