Unfair to call cabby a cheat over 40 cents

I REFER to Ms Lee Li Cheng's letter on March 31, 'Cabby cheats take passenger for a ride'. The distance between Lichi Avenue and Potong Pasir is about 1.2km and that from the junction of Lichi Avenue along Upper Aljunied Road to Potong Pasir is 1.8km - a difference of 600m.

That means Ms Lee paid about 40 cents extra and for this she brands the taxi driver a cheat. Taking a longer route during peak hours can avoid jams and is safer. The fastest route need not be the shortest and the shortest route need not be the fastest during peak hours.

A taxi driver should ask the passenger his preferred route and, if he has none, the cabby should tell him the route he plans to take. The bottom line is the taxi driver should take the route suggested by the passenger.

I don't think Ms Lee should brand the taxi driver as a cheat for 40 cents or use her experience to accuse other cabbies. The best way to solve her problem is to take down the taxi number and make a report to the taxi company. I suggest Ms Lee take the bus or MRT to avoid such misunderstandings in future - and maybe she will be richer by 40 cents next time.
