Thai general's star 'won't shine in politics'

GENERAL Sonthi Boonyarataglin, the leader of the military junta in Thailand, has been advised by an astrologer not to enter politics.

The general's star will lose its lustre next year, spelling misfortune if he steps into the political arena, said renowned astrologer Panuwat Panvichartkul.

According to a report published in the Bangkok Post, the astrologer foresees a rough road ahead for Gen Sonthi.

Mr Panuwat justified his prediction thus: Since it is the Year of the Pig, which is defined by the fire element and is closely associated with firearms, it means soldiers will be in power. But the next year - the Year of the Rat - belongs to the earth element, which will bring an end to military rule.

Gen Sonthi, who is said to be contemplating contesting the general election expected by the year-end, will see a twist of fate for the worse if he becomes a politician, as next year is predicted to be beset by sporadic periods of unrest.

Gen Sonthi had seized power in a coup last September and installed General Surayud Chulanont as premier weeks later.

The general, who is due to retire on Sept 30, is being cautioned by critics not to stand for elections.

In an interview published in the Nation newspaper last week, the 61-year-old general remained coy about his political future, but said he was cautious of those who advised him about embarking on a career in government.

'I have to read between the lines the viewpoints supporting and opposing. I'll try to figure out if both the supporters and the critics have any hidden agenda,' he said.
