TRAFFIC marshals, appointed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to clear accidents on expressways, will be used on all such roads from today.

Previously, these auxiliary police officers were deployed to accident scenes only on the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE), Central Expressway and Fort Canning Tunnel.

With more of them set to take to the roads, the number of such officers on expressways here will go up from 15 to 51.

Traffic marshals will also work on KPE Phase 2 when it opens on Sept 20.

The job of the marshals, first introduced to expressways when the KPE opened last October, is to help prevent tailbacks caused by minor accidents.

When a crash is detected, the marshals will be activated together with towing services and are expected to arrive on the scene in eight to 15 minutes.

They will then clear the scene with the help of the towing services and the Expressway Monitoring Advisory System.

They will also preserve evidence in accidents that do not involve deaths or serious injuries.

The traffic marshals are certified auxiliary police officers from Certis Cisco and have relevant experience in responding to emergencies, said the LTA.

The authorities hope the marshals will clear 75 per cent of accident sites within 12 minutes.
