THE Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has given catfish imported from Vietnam a clean bill of health following rumours that stocks were contaminated with toxic chemicals like arsenic.

The decision, revealed to The Straits Times this week, is a relief to the growing number of shoppers who have started opting for the fish, which is much cheaper than staples such as cod and saba.

Concerns over catfish from Vietnam - also known as pangas or sutchi - were raised in January when an e-mail began making the rounds claiming that they were laced with poisons.
