WASHINGTON: The chant was the same at each stop in Wisconsin, Michigan and New Mexico: 'Sa-rah! Sa-rah!'

It is early days, but Mr John McCain has clearly energised the Republican grassroots with his choice of Mrs Sarah Palin as his running mate.

In battleground states such as Virginia, Republicans who were previously unenthusiastic about Mr McCain's candidacy are signing up as volunteers.
