TOKYO: Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will choose a new leader today for the third time in three years to replace outgoing Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.

Five candidates - including former foreign minister and front-runner Taro Aso - are vying for the post, which promises the victor the premiership due to the LDP's domination of the Lower House.

Mr Fukuda is stepping down after a lacklustre one year in office.
