Experts urge more help for needy

WITH Singapore now officially in a technical recession, economists are calling for the Government to do more to cushion the effects of slower growth on ordinary citizens.

It could offer tax reliefs and other rebates for lower-income Singaporeans as well as tweak its Workfare scheme to benefit those who may lose their jobs. This, they say, would give targeted and direct help to those who will need it most.

And some economists think that the relief measures could come as early as next month, well in advance of next year's Budget exercise in February.
