On paper, Singapore looked odds-on favourites to win the ERKE German Open women's singles table tennis title in Berlin.

In the absence of powerhouses China, only the Republic boasted players from the world's top 10.

But as Li Jiawei, Feng Tianwei and Wang Yuegu, who are the tournament's top three seeds, would admit, showing up alone does not guarantee success.
