MR YE Zhizheng, 71, was the oldest of 23 finalists in the National Library Board's (NLB) first storytelling competition for seniors.

But, with his silver tooth flashing and hands waving, he gave such a lively performance that he won the best storyteller award in the Mandarin category yesterday.

Whipping out an MP3 player from his pocket, he told The Straits Times he had practised for the contest by recording his story on the electronic device and listening to it to find ways to improve.
