MANILA: A Singapore woman is to be charged in court today for violating the Philippines' child welfare code after an investigation into an alleged baby trafficking operation, police said.

Irene Low Ai Lian, 50, was arrested on Monday night during a raid on a house in the town of Jalajala near Manila.

There, police found nine babies - five girls and four boys - aged between six months and one year.

Adoption operation is legitimate, says husband

IRENE Low Ai Lian's husband yesterday disputed allegations against his wife, saying the 50-year-old Singaporean had done nothing wrong.

Mr Robert Fox told The Straits Times his wife had spent the last two years heading a legitimate adoption agency in the small Philippine town of Jalajala. 'She would not do anything against the law,' said Mr Fox, who flew to the Philippines yesterday to join his wife.

Low also runs an adoption agency in Singapore, called the Fox Family Services Adoption Centre, which she set up two years ago.
