Court orders builder to foot $305,000 concrete bill

A CONSTRUCTION company has been ordered to pay a $305,000 bill for concrete after a court rejected arguments that the firm was forced into an unfavourable contract when Indonesia banned sand exports last year.

The firm, Kwan Yong Construction, claimed that after the supply was abruptly cut off, the price of concrete - a key ingredient of which is sand - skyrocketed.

In the midst of building a school at Clementi Avenue 5, the company claimed it was forced to sign a contract that tabbed the price of concrete at almost triple the rate before the ban.
