KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) has chosen a veteran grassroots leader as its candidate in a closely watched Terengganu by-election, making a last-minute change to cool tensions between two factions in the Islamist party.

Mr Abdul Wahid is a five-term PAS state assemblyman for Terengganu, but he is relatively unknown outside the party.
