KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) has chosen a veteran grassroots leader as its candidate in a closely watched Terengganu by-election, making a last-minute change to cool tensions between two factions in the Islamist party.
Mr Abdul Wahid Endut, 52, was chosen over bigger names in the party after PAS elders faced a deadlock to name a candidate acceptable to everyone for the Jan 17 by-election.

Mr Abdul Wahid is a five-term PAS state assemblyman for Terengganu, but he is relatively unknown outside the party.
