Open-air cinema makes a comeback

By Frankie Chee

When retiree Yeo Chong Suah, 70, caught a movie one recent night, it was a breeze. Literally.

He steered himself on a wheelchair from his home across a road and onto a concrete patch with shrubbery at the side, where he was able to find a suitable spot among rows of plastic chairs - at an open-air cinema.

He was among 120 mostly elderly people sitting in the cool evening air under a starry sky at the Whampoa Community Club at 8pm last Wednesday, enjoying a free screening of an old movie starring 1960s actress Grace Chang Ge Lan.
