A TOTAL of 23,917 Singaporeans have checked their details in the registers of electors, which have been open for inspection since March 3.

This is lower than the 41,412 who did so in the first-week period when registers were last opened in January 2006 - when talk of an impending general election had already been rife for months.

Figures released by the Elections Department yesterday also showed that there has not been a sizeable number of eligible Singaporeans abroad who have registered as 'overseas electors' via the Internet or at Singapore's diplomatic missions in nine cities.
