First mobile plans with no contracts

CELLPHONE users who do not want to be tied down to a 12- or 24-month contract now have another option.

SingTel yesterday rolled out a new post-paid cellphone plan that has no long-term contract - the first such plan here. Users pay the same amount as for SingTel's existing plans, for what is dubbed the SuperSIM option. But they get more talk time and more free text messages.

The catch is that there is no handset subsidy with the plan. Those who sign up for it will have to pay the full price for a new phone. This can work out to as much as $600 more than if a user were to take on a contract, depending on the handset and the length of the deal.
