STI's 4% rise ignites hope of recovery

IT MIGHT be a bear rally or a dead cat bounce. Whatever the technical term, yesterday's stellar stock market showing gave investors something to celebrate and sparked yet more hope that the worst could be over.

'We believe that the recent rally in financial markets signifies an inflection point,' said Barclays Capital research head Larry Kantor.

'Expectations have been driven down to extremes, and the beginnings of a global economic recovery are evident.'
