Escape to Johor

Just where exactly in Singapore did Mas Selamat Kastari set off from to make that desperate swim across the Johor Strait to Malaysia?

That is a question that has gripped Singaporeans' imagination since news of his capture broke on Friday.

Yesterday, a Malaysian newspaper reported that the terrorist had swum more than 1km to Stulang, Johor. Across from Stulang on the Singapore coast is the Senoko Power Station area. Close to this is Admiralty Road West, a secluded spot where illegal immigrants have been caught swimming to Singapore from Malaysia.

Here are four probable spots in Singapore that Mas Selamat may have set off from:

Likely set off from Admiralty Road West

Admiralty Road West, a road near the Senoko Fishing Port and the Senoko Power Station, lies between two jetties which are off limits to the public.

It is the area Mas Selamat Kastari most likely set off from soon after his escape in February last year.

Just 1.1km across the water lies the town of Stulang in Johor. Malaysia's The Star newspaper reported yesterday that this was where the terrorist had landed.

Jalan Bahtera (Road is 1km away from Johor)

The first thing you see at the end of Jalan Bahtera near Lim Chu Kang is a wire fence lining the shores of the Johor Strait.

But walk 10m into the vegetated area that fringes the water and the razor-sharp fence stops. Go a bit deeper and the swampy land opens up to clear waters.

Jalan Bahtera is near the Singapore Scout Association's Sarimbun Campsite.

Kranji Dam

If a fugitive were thinking of escaping from Singapore via the Kranji Dam area near the Sungei Buloh Nature Park, he would have to first contend with hordes of people, then crocodiles.

Near the dam is a reservoir park that is popular with fishing enthusiasts and families out on picnics. When we visited yesterday, at least 20 people were seen camping and at least five people were fishing.

Away from the crowd and deeper into the vegetation, a triangular sign with a drawing of a crocodile screams 'Watch it!'. Another sign says that fishing is prohibited. Yet another warns of lightning in the area.

Sembawang Park

Beyond the trees and shrubs in Sembawang Park lies an area overlooking the sea. At this point, Singapore is merely 1.5km from the coast of Johor. The park is easily accessible by public transport, but it is unlikely Mas Selamat Kastari took off from here. The sea is wide open and even small boats far away can be spotted easily. 'Someone standing on the coast might see a floating figure and raise the alarm,' said the maritime expert. 'It's very visible.'
