New Indian party set up in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: There has been a flurry of activity in the Malaysian Indian community in recent weeks, following the release of five Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leaders from detention.

Yesterday, a breakaway faction of Hindraf formed yet another Indian-based political party, even as the main leadership was engaged in a heated exchange of words with the police.

Rights group Hindraf became a big player in Malaysian politics after it organised a protest by thousands of ethnic Indians on the streets of Kuala Lumpur in November 2007 to ask for equal rights to jobs and education.
