It is a day that will become a reference point in the lives of people all over the world: Where were you the day you learnt that Michael Jackson died?

Just as older people remember what they were doing when Beatle John Lennon was shot in 1980, yesterday will be a key date for the Twitter generation when the music died for one of the greatest performers of all time.

Shock consumed music-lovers everywhere as they learned that their beloved King of Pop - MJ to his fans - had died of cardiac arrest at the age of 50 after collapsing at his rented home in Los Angeles on Thursday evening.

Michael Jackson was preparing for what was to be his greatest comeback when he died on Thursday.

According to reports, he was rehearsing for the unprecedented 50-show This Is It! run of concerts, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. He was supposed to show up on Wednesday at 7pm but did not arrive till 10pm, and he was listless.

Sources who were at the rehearsals say that Jackson's late arrival and his lethargic state were normal.
