Peranakan design for Apec shirt

By Esther Teo

THERE will be plenty of political and economic statements at next month's Apec meetings but the most memorable might just be the fashion one that designer Wykidd Song has planned.

Fashionistas usually have to wait until the final days of the event to see what the host nation has come up with but Mr Song's eye-catching shirt with a mandarin collar was unveiled yesterday to rag-trade applause.

Mr Song hopes the creation, which pays homage to the Peranakan culture, will find a permanent place in prime ministerial and presidential wardrobes. The fashion whizz, who co-founded the Song+Kelly label and designs under Wk Design, said that he set out to create a garment that was both comfortable and sophisticated, worn long after the Apec meetings are over.
