A RISE in sales in the teeth of a poor economic climate helped SingTel defy the odds to post a 10 per cent gain in second-quarter net profits.

The company's group chief executive Chua Sock Koong was all smiles at a media briefing yesterday where the results were unveiled, especially as they had been 'achieved amid a cautious economic climate and despite the negative currency impact'.

Net profit came in at $956 million for the three months to Sept 30 on the back of a 5.4 per cent increase in revenue to $4.1 billion.
