Obama, Hu pledge to work together

BEIJING: China and the United States emerged from key talks yesterday pledging to build a bond tighter than ever between the world's two most powerful countries, tiptoeing around long-prickly issues like Tibet and trade.

Carefully reading out scripted statements after talks which stretched more than two hours, Chinese President Hu Jintao and his US counterpart Barack Obama took pains to stress their countries' common interests and global clout - yet politely made plain their divergences.

Both leaders emphasised their broad-ranging cooperation on the financial crisis, climate change and the Iranian and North Korean nuclear crises.
