Tottenham 9
Wigan Athletic 1

LONDON: Tottenham ran riot against a woeful Wigan side yesterday, with Jermain Defoe scoring five sensational goals to rocket to the top of the Premier League goal chart and send a powerful statement to England coach Fabio Capello.

The 9-1 scoreline was Spurs' biggest ever win in the Premier League, and the first time a team have scored nine since Manchester United thrashed Ipswich 9-0 at Old Trafford in 1995.
