Myanmar's junta rolls out election laws

BANGKOK: Myanmar's ruling regime will appoint the body that oversees a planned election, state media said yesterday, sparking anger from rights groups.

No date has been set for the election, the first since 1990, but it is expected to be held later this year.

A two-page supplement in yesterday's edition of the New Light of Myanmar - the regime's mouthpiece - signed by Senior General Than Shwe, specified that the regime would pick the Election Commissioners.
