JAKARTA: Indonesia hopes to build up its defence forces by enabling people to volunteer for national service.

Under a proposed Bill, men and women between the ages of 18 and 45 can enlist on a 'purely voluntary' basis 'to provide a channel for our citizens to serve the nation'.

The Defence Ministry's director-general for potential defence, Mr Budi Susilo Soepandji, told The Straits Times the plan does not make service compulsory like in Singapore.
