Chinese Internet celebrity Guo Meimei has been arrested by Beijing police for allegedly taking part in illegal World Cup gambling, Chinese news reports said.

Guo, 23, was among a group of nine people who were arrested on July 10.

According to reports on China Daily and South China Morning Post, the group had started a gambling website allowing gamblers to place bets via the telephone and mobile messaging applications.

Guo confessed to the crime, China Daily said.

The online star first found fame when she posted photos of herself in expensive gowns, bikinis and a Maserati three years ago.

She also falsely claimed that she was the 'general manager of Red Cross Society of China' on her micro-blog.

Her posts piqued the curiosity of netizens, who wondered how she could afford luxury goods while working for a non-profit organisation.

It was later revealed that Guo had lied about working for the charity.
