N. Korea to conduct live-fire drills in West Sea

The Korea Herald/ANN | Song Sang-ho | Tuesday, Apr 29, 2014

The North Korean military on Tuesday zoned off two areas for live-fire drills near the Northern Limit Line, a de facto inter-Korean sea border, further ratcheting up tensions on the peninsula.

At around 8:25 a.m., the North's western frontline command sent a fax notification of the plan to stage the drills near its islands of Wollaedo Island and Jangjaedo, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The drills will come less than a month after the North fired some 500 artillery shells near the Northern Limit Line with about 100 of them falling south of the NLL.

The JCS said that the South Korean military has told residents on the frontline islands and fishing crew to evacuate to safer areas, and that it has put its personnel on standby for possible provocations.
