Guangdong province has received donations valued at more than 50 billion yuan (S$10 billion) from overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao since the Chinese mainland introduced its reform and opening-up policy in the late 1970s, China News Service reported.

"The figure represents more than 60 per cent of the country's total donations from overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao," Zhao Yufang, vice-governor of Guangdong province, told a work conference on donations from overseas on Tuesday.

Since 2008, Guangdong, to which more than 25 million overseas Chinese can trace their roots, has received donations worth more than 1 billion yuan from overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao each year, Zhao said.

"Overseas Chinese rooted in Guangdong have played an important role in Guangdong's economic construction in the past years," Zhao said.

In addition to construction of infrastructure facilities, the major share of donations have been spent in the construction and expansion of 20,000 schools, accounting for more than 60 per cent of the province's total, 2,000 hospitals representing one-eighth of Guangdong's total, and more than 2,000 homes for the elderly and kindergartens, she added.
