A farmer in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, tends pots of nanakusa, or seven herbs, of spring, before shipping them on Friday. They are called Nanakusa-kago, or nanakusa baskets, and are popular New Year's ornaments. Each pot contains seven spring herbs, including seri Japanese parsley and nazuna cress, and wooden stakes bearing their names. The soil is covered with small white pebbles, which are supposed to look like snow.
