Woman arrested for using knife on Taipei train

The China Post/ANN | Friday, Jun 13, 2014

TAIPEI - A 60-year-old woman was arrested yesterday for allegedly waving a fruit knife in a train. It turned out to be false alarm.

The woman was commuting to Taipei for work and used her knife to cut fruit when the train passed Taoyuan. She reportedly washed her knife in a restroom on the train. However, her swinging the knife in order to get rid of excess water startled someone who then reported the incident to the police.

The police arrived at the scene when the train stopped at the Yingge station and found the woman who then produced the 17-centimer long sheathed knife from her bag.

Despite the false alarm, the woman was escorted off the train in the next station at Shanjia where the media was waiting, together with police officers from several precincts. The woman was very distressed by all the fuss, and seemed unable to grasp the fact that she was "arrested for eating fruits."

The woman then made a phone call to her workplace and reported that she would not be able to come in. She claims she is likely to lose her job if her boss finds out what happened. Facing the police's attentive inquiry, the woman was embarrassed, and said she will no longer wave knives in trains.
