KUALA LUMPUR - The wife of 26-year-old L/Kpl Lional Richard Jr was stunned when she learned her husband was shot while on duty.

Richard's wife, who wished to be known only as Carole, is positive that he will overcome this traumatising ordeal.

In Friday's incident, Richard and his partner Kons Zul Fazli Atlahi, 28, were shot by a tattooed man at Jalan Lembah Maju 1/16, Pandan Indah, while they were patrolling the area about 10.30am.

The man fired three shots at the policemen, hitting Richard on his abdomen and Zul Fazli on the lower part of his abdomen.

The wounded cops underwent surgery later and are now reported to be in stable condition at the Ampang Hospital.

Carole said her husband was meticulous since joining the police force eight years ago.

"Lional has never been shot since becoming a policeman. He is experienced in handling dangerous situations and has arrested his fair share of criminals," said the 22-year-old housewife.

She said although the surgery had left her husband weak, he was still full of fighting spirit.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Khairuldin Saad said police had intensified the manhunt for the shooter.

"We reviewed a closed circuit television recording of the gunman escaping through a store's back lane.

"From that recording, we have produced a photo of the suspect and will release it on Sunday (today)," he said. "We have reasons to believe the man is a gang member based on a tiger tattoo on his back. However, we have yet to ascertain which gang he belonged to," he said.

A man, believed to be the suspect's accomplice, was seen with him at the time of the shooting but was not caught on camera.
