Ex-Aetos officer jailed for insulting modesty

The Straits Times | Monday, Jun 2, 2014

Kalai Selvan Ramaiya had asked three women held at Jurong Police Division to show him their bras.

A former auxiliary police officer, who abused his position of authority when he asked three female suspects in a police lock-up to show him their bras, has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Kalai Selvan Ramaiya, 28, pleaded guilty yesterday to three charges of insulting the modesty of the women at Jurong Police Division last October.

Deputy Public Prosecutor James Chew Shi Jun said the former Aetos Security Management police constable was on duty on Oct 1 when he spoke to a 41-year-old female suspect who was being held in the division lock-up. This even though there was no reason for him to do so.

Kalai Selvan caught a glimpse of her cleavage when she bent down to speak to him through a small pigeon-hole on the door of the cell.

He then told the Indonesian woman that she would be in remand for one week and he needed to check her bra. At first, she refused but reluctantly complied after he insisted because she was afraid of him.

She did not report the matter after the incident because she did not know if the officer was allowed to act in that way.

The next day, Kalai Selvan spoke to two Singaporean women, aged 21 and 20, sharing the same cell and asked them separately to show him their bras, and they complied.

The younger woman, however, made a police report over the incident after she was bailed out at about 2am the next day.

Arguing for a stiff sentence, Mr Chew said Kalai Selvan had damaged the institutional standing and the public confidence that the police currently enjoy.

The opportunistic and deceptive manner in which he committed the offences was also disturbing, he added.
