Hotel worker’s car set on fire in apparent arson case

JOHOR BARU - A hotel employee has suffered losses amounting to RM10,000 (S$3900) in minutes following an apparent arson.

Hayati Hycinth Abdullah, 30, who works in a hotel in Taman Abad, was alerted by a neighbour at her flat in Jalan Tawakkal in Larkin here of the fire at around 5.45am yesterday.

It is learnt that some members of the public quickly alerted the fire brigade which arrived at the scene shortly.

The city’s Fire and Rescue De­­partment operations head, Azman Mohd Surani, said on their arrival, the Perodua Myvi, which was park­ed at the flat’s car park, was already in flames.

“We noticed that the fire had started from the back of the vehicle and about 60% of the back seat and boot of the vehicle was destroyed by the flames,” he said, adding that initial investigations pointed towards foul play.

Azman said the fire was extinguished within minutes and no one was hurt during the incident.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh confirmed the incident and called for witnesses to come forward to help with police investigations.

We have yet to uncover the motive behind the fire. We estimate losses at about RM10,000,” he said.

He said investigations would be conducted under Section 435 of the Penal Code for arson which carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine upon conviction.
