Man slits nephew’s throat with cleaver

The Nation/ANN | Wednesday, Jul 2, 2014

It is believed he used a meat cleaver to slit the nephew's throat.

KOTA KINABALU - A four-year-old boy died after his throat was slit by his uncle shortly before the family broke their fast at a restaurant at Telupid, 195km from here.

In the 6.10pm incident on Monday, Mohamad Khairul Aize Abdullah was playing by himself around his mother's restaurant while everyone was busy preparing for the breaking of fast, when his 23-year-old paternal uncle beckoned him to the back of the restaurant.

It is believed he then used a meat cleaver to slit the nephew's throat.

The boy's screams alerted his mother, who rushed him to hospital. However, Mohamad Khairul was pronounced dead upon arrival.

It was believed the unemployed suspect was of unsound mind.

Beluran district police chief Supt V. Sivanathan said the suspect did not make any attempt to escape and was caught by people at the restaurant immediately after the incident before being handed over to police.

"We will be sending him for psychiatric evaluation," he said, adding that the victim's body had been sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan for post-mortem.

No motive has been established. A cleaver believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from the scene.
