Middle-aged man arrested for raping male models

The China Post/ANN | Wednesday, Oct 1, 2014

TAIPEI, Taiwan - The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) apprehended a middle-aged man in Taipei on Monday for allegedly drugging and raping a dozen male models in mainland China, including one who died from a drug overdose. The CIB yesterday handed the suspect to the Shihlin District Prosecutors Office in Taipei, which pressed for his detention for allegedly committing multiple sex crimes and one homicide.

CIB officers nabbed the suspect, 42-year-old Japanese-Taiwanese man Lu Po-wen (杜博文), in his Taipei home in front of his mother after tip-offs from Chinese police. The Taiwan authorities also uncovered over 70 date rape drug pills, 11 sleeping pills and other drugs at the scene. Lu was reportedly surprised by the arrest and broke into tears in front of his shocked mother.

Lu was hired by a company in Guangzhou, China, in 2006 as a sales representative specialising in the Japanese market. He lured male models he met online to job interviews at hotels by posing as a TV station senior executive or an advertisement agency owner, the Taiwanese police said.

Lu tricked unsuspecting job applicants into drinking drugged beer, which he pretended to be the target product for fabricated ad campaigns, and then had sexual intercourse with them while they were unconscious. He also took away the victims' belongings and money before leaving, according to the police, who pointed out that Lu was convicted and jailed for one year in China for drug raping in 2008.

Lu returned to his criminal methods after leaving jail. In February this year, Lu ensnared a 24-year-old model to his drug rape trap in a mainland hotel, the police pointed out. The model, however, suffered from a fatal overdose induced by Lu's drug. Lu fled the scene and returned to Taiwan.

Even in Taiwan, Lu continued his crimes and raped several models he tricked into traveling to hotels in Vietnam, the police have found. Mainland police identified Lu as the suspect in over a dozen rape cases based on evidence such as semen found at the scene of crimes, and they notified the CIB to request their cooperation in apprehending him.

Shihlin Prosecutors are now investigating whether Lu had committed similar crimes in Taiwan.
