Panther carcass discovered in anti-smuggling raid

The Star/ANN | Wednesday, Sep 24, 2014

A panther's carcass was discovered in a van after anti-smuggling enforcers pursued the vehicle following a tip-off at a village in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, reported Harian Metro.

The animal, weighing about 100kg, was apparently shot in the jungles at the Tanah Merah-Jeli border and was being transported to a neighbouring country where it could fetch between RM100,000 (S$39,000) and RM800,000 in the black market.

State anti-smuggling unit acting commander Insp Wan Zakaria Hamzah said the van driver, a local, fled into the bushes near Kampung Kedondong, Bunut Susu, during the 2am incident on Monday.

Insp Wan Zakaria said parts of the panther's internal organs had already been removed.
