Day in court: Gayathry (left) and Kaviarasan, covering their faces while being led out of the Bukit Mertajam Sessions Court.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Malaysia - A 30-year-old woman, who allegedly belted her five-year-old son for being naughty and refusing to study, now faces the grim prospect of being sent to the gallows for the boy's death.

T. Gayathry is accused of murdering little S. Kaviarasan, whose body was found dumped at an oil palm estate in Bukit Tengah here.

Jointly charged with her yesterday was security guard R. Saravanan Kumar, 24.

No plea was recorded from the two accused, who were not offered bail as the offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code is non-bailable.

The pair allegedly committed the offence at roadside in Jalan Ladang Permatang Sera at between 8am on Sept 20 and 11.25am on Sept 29.

It was reported that Gayathry had lodged a police report in Kulim, claiming her son had gone missing near the Esplanade in Penang on Sept 23.

She was said to have confessed later she had lashed the boy with a belt as he was naughty and had refused to study.

She claimed during an interrogation at the Bayan Baru police lockup that the boy died at about 4.30pm on Sept 20.

Sessions judge Musyiri Peet fixed Dec 15 for mention.

DPP Lim Saw Sim prosecuted the case.
