Local start-up Fisheye Analytics has been snapped up by a unit of the world's biggest marketing and public relations firm.
Fisheye - a media monitoring and analytics services business - has been acquired by Kantar Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of WPP, acquired for an undisclosed sum. Kantar
Media provides consumer insights for businesses.
Fisheye, which was founded by Singapore permanent resident Ashwin Gayam in 2009, provides social media intelligence for businesses and government agencies here and overseas.
It has also worked with Fifa, the international governing body for football.
Fisheye had its beginnings at Insead Singapore campus where Mr Gayam was a research associate looking into natural language processing. He focused on making sense of user content on social media networks.
"When the research was completed, I commercialised the idea and started Fisheye instead of burying our research results in academic journals."
He said the difference between Fisheye and other social media monitoring agencies is that the start-up can trawl online postings in 190 countries and in 67 languages. Its competitors trawl mostly in South-east Asia or Asia, he said.
"Every month, we look at 25 terabyte of data. Because we're global, we're able to get global customers like Fifa and that's why WPP was interested in us," he added.
A WPP statement said Fisheye had revenues of nearly $800,000 for the year ended Oct 31.
