Women being divorced over frivolous reasons

The Star/ANN | Wednesday, Apr 16, 2014

Many women were divorced by their husbands for frivolous reasons, Harian Metro reports. A woman, known as Nora, 27, was given the "rejection" over an eye ailment her husband was suffering from. She said her marriage was ended for a reason which did not make sense.

Eight years ago, her then husband asked for her help to apply some medicine to his eyes.

"He told me to use a cotton bud to apply the medicine. At first, I hesitated but I obeyed anyway. Suddenly, he shouted out in pain and we quarrelled before he uttered the talak tiga (third degree proclamation of divorce, which leaves no room for reconciliation)," said Nora, who is a single mother.

After the divorce, Nora said and her two children moved in with her parents but her former husband began harassing her.

Despite numerous police reports, the man threatened to hurt her and kidnap the children.

Another woman, known as Nadia, in her early 20s, said her husband asked for a divorce as she did not know how to cook.

She said that early this month, her father-in-law went to her parents' house and told them that his son wanted a divorce. Nadia said her father-in-law took his son to file the case in court three days before visiting her parents.

Nadia said the divorce case would be mentioned in court next month, adding that she was traumatised by the whole episode. She has lodged a police report over the manner in which her divorce was filed.
