SINGAPORE - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) today presented 28 scholarships at its annual joint scholarship awards presentation ceremony at the SPH News Centre.
The scholarships given out this year were as follows: six SPH Journalism scholarships, 12 scholarships to children of SPH staff and newspaper vendors, and ten SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships.
Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman for SPH and SPH Foundation, was the event's Guest-of-Honour. He presented the SPH Journalism and SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships. Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer of SPH and Director of SPH Foundation, gave out the scholarships to the children of SPH staff and newspaper vendors.
In his address, Dr Lee said: "Like all media companies world-wide, SPH faces challenges. The rapid growth and pervasiveness of digital and social media is encroaching on our traditional newspaper publishing operation. Changing media consumption habits especially among younger people have added to our competition. To counter these challenges, we are transforming SPH to better serve our consumers both in print and online. We have also extended our reach with a wide range of mobile products."
He added: "Talent will remain at the heart of our strategy. We will continue to invest in talent to help us deliver quality journalism that will win hearts, shape lives and empower minds."
One of the recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarship 2013 was Ms Jan Lee Puay Yee. She will be pursuing International Liberal Studies at the Waseda University in Japan.
She said : "Since young, I have enjoyed learning the Japanese language and culture. To be given the opportunity to pursue a liberal arts course in Japan is a dream come true. My internship at the Straits Times Life! Desk was also a fulfilling experience as it allowed me to further my interest in the arts, drama and theatre. I look forward to playing my part and covering the local Singapore arts scene's many exciting developments."
