University of Technology Petronas, one of the two universities currently in Seri Iskandar.

SERI ISKANDAR, Malaysia - Perak has reached another milestone with the setting up of a university, international school and hotels here in two years' time.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the EduCity integrated project by UCSI Education Group was in line with the state government's vision to turn Perak, especially Seri Iskandar, into an education hub.

Dr Zambry said under the Perak Aman Jaya development plan, the area was earmarked as an education zone, where two universities had already been built, with UCSI University being the third.

He said the project, set in a vast area covering 121ha and split into three phases, was expected to be completed over the next decade.

"Upon completion, the township will boast campuses, an international school, over 15,000 student apartments, two hotels, residential properties, sports centre, transport terminal and commercial shopping outlets.

"With a 28-year track record of excellence, UCSI is among the first private universities in the country recognised as a foremost education provider.

"With UCSI's reputation and international experience, I am confident this will help turn Perak into a global schoolhouse," he said in his speech at the project's ground-breaking ceremony here yesterday.

Among those present were UCSI University chancellor Tan Sri Dr Abdul Rahman Arshad, the University Council chairman Tan Sri Musa Mohamad and UCSI Group founder Datuk Peter Ng.

Perak will be the latest campus set up by UCSI after Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak and Terengganu.

Works on the first phase - which includes the campus, the international school and a boutique hotel - is expected to start at the end of this year and be completed two years later.

Ng said, after speaking to Dr Zambry on a number of occasions, that his passion for education was infectious and it was his aim to equip the youth of Perak with knowledge and skills.

"This is the reason why UCSI Education Group is here through EduCity Seri Iskandar, as Perak wants to give its people world-class education, and we exist to provide that.

"The university's presence at EduCity will be complemented by a third international school by the group in the country, followed by the establishment of Le Quadri, the boutique hotel brand," he added.

EduCity Seri Iskandar is developed in partnership with Jumbo Straits Sdn Bhd.
